Students at Delaware Elementary School got a taste of the country today, literally, as local farmer Clint Kern brought fresh Kale from his farm and visited with students as part of the Farm to School program. Students were encouraged to try the Kale and it was included with the school lunch's salad option.
In recognition of October as National Farm to School month, Kern was at the school to help make the connection between what students eat and where it comes from, as well as, to promote healthy foods and eating habits. Staff from Welborn Foundation and USI dietetic students were in schools today to encourage students to try the Kale.
According to Linda Eidson, director of Food & Nutrition, Kern has delivered fresh Kale to all EVSC schools for students to enjoy and the EVSC will continue to work with local farmers to get more fresh vegetables and fruits in the schools.
