Multi-Grade High Ability Identification Process

The process begins with the administration of a screening protocol. All kindergarten students are screened using an administered abilities assessment. Second, fourth and seventh grade students are screened using an achievement assessment.

After the screening takes place, students are identified for administration of the high ability aptitude measure.

A combination of the following criteria may be used to identify our high ability students:
• Potential-based (aptitude) Measure: Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)
• Performance-based (achievement) Measure: NWEA scores
• Other Measures: Teacher nomination/observation, projects, and rating scales

Screeners utilized at each grade level:
Kindergarten: Cogat Screener
Second Grade: NWEA
Fourth Grade: NWEA
Seventh Grade: NWEA

Off Grade Level & New Students
Off grade-level identification will be considered for students who transferred into the EVSC and were not afforded the opportunity to participate in screening at either their kindergarten, second, fourth, or seventh grade year.
